Maruti Suzuki Swift: The Popular Hatchback
The Maruti Suzuki Swift is one of the most popular hatchbacks in the country. Despite being popular, its market share suffered a steep decline of 37% annually and 29% monthly as of March 2022. This hatchback is popular among family-oriented buyers, fleet operators, and sports motorists. The ongoing Maruti Suzuki Swift is in its third generation, and the next generation should arrive later this year. But that’s speculation as of now. However, keeping that aside, the ongoing Swift received a complete makeover in 2018. And in between the years, the hatchback has received a few updates. These include added features and cosmetic changes. That said, it again received a mid-cycle update in February 2022. Speaking of updates, it might get a complete makeover, making it the next generation that will enter the Indian market later this year.
So, if you are planning to purchase this hatchback, below are the things you need to know.
Maruti Suzuki Swift: Powertrain
The Swift shares its engine and platform with other Maruti Suzuki cars, such as the Dzire, Baleno, and Ignis. The Maruti Suzuki Swift engine options include a K-series 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine that produces 89 bhp and 113Nm of torque. It is available with a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT unit.
As for fuel efficiency, the Maruti Suzuki Swift’s mileage is 23.20kmpl in the manual transmission and 23.76kmpl in the AMT. All are ARAI-claimed mileage figures. That means real-life mileage would be more or less the same.
Maruti Suzuki Swift: Exterior updates
Over the years, the Maruti Suzuki Swift’s exterior has grown mature as it sports a sophisticated styling with several chrome garnishes on its body. On the front end, it has a hexagonal honeycomb black grille paired with a single chrome strip. Then, as for the lights, it gets a pair of LED headlights with DRLs along with LED foglights. Another notable update is that it gets a dual-tone exterior that is exclusively available in the top-spec ZXi+ trim. That said, there are three dual-tone options: Pearl Arctic White, Solid Fire Red with a Pearl Midnight Black roof, and Midnight Blue with an Arctic White roof.
Apart from that, the car runs on 15-inch precision-cut-alloy wheels.
Overall, the ongoing Suzuki Swift has an elevated sense of design. Despite having several cosmetic changes, the carmaker didn’t lose the ‘Swift’ appeal. Moreover, design plays a vital role in sales.
And that is why, over the years, the Maruti Swift has created a brand value among car owners in India.
Maruti Suzuki Swift: Interior updates
As for the Maruti Suzuki Swift interior, the most notable updates are the silver ornamentation and a twin-pod instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch coloured MID. Furthermore, for added features, it now gets cruise control, an idle start/stop function, and keyfob synchronised auto-foldable ORVMs, to name a few.
Apart from these updates, it has power windows (front and rear), a multi-function steering wheel, an auto HVAC system, keyless entry, etc. Additionally, it gets 60:40 split seats, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), and much more.

Maruti Suzuki Swift: Safety Features
On the safety front, the top-spec variant of the Maruti Suzuki Swift features hill assist, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, a reverse parking camera, ISOFIX child-seat anchorages, etc. In addition to safety features, it also gets brake assist, an anti-theft alarm, auto headlights, an engine immobiliser, and a pedestrian protection compliance system.
The pedestrian protection compliance system, aka electronic pedestrian protection, comes in handy during pedestrian collisions. In this technology, the acceleration sensor sends signals to the control unit when a pedestrian hits the car’s bonnet. The control unit further orders the motor and actuators to elevate the hinge of the bonnet, i.e., the upper end. The reason behind this feature is to prevent a pedestrian’s head from coming into contact with the engine’s heat.
However, the build quality plays a vital role, along with an array of safety features.
Maruti Suzuki Swift: Variants and Prices
The Maruti Suzuki Swift has four trims: LXi, VXi, ZXi, and ZXi+. And as for the Swift variants, there are nine options in total.
There is one petrol engine and two transmission options.
Besides that, the Maruti Suzuki Swift’s price starts at Rs 5.92 lakh for the base model, LXi MT. And it goes up to Rs 8.85 lakh for the top model, the ZXi Plus DT AMT. All prices are ex-showroom Delhi as of July 2022.
In terms of rivalry, the Maruti Suzuki Swift’s competitors include the Hyundai Grand i10, Renault Triber, and the Citroen C3, to name a few. Moreover, the new C3 has a lower price than the Maruti Suzuki Swift. There is approximately a price difference of Rs 20,000.
