Conventional petrol has long been the source of fuel for most cars that we own and see on the roads. That has been the unshaken norm for years and decades. But recently that quickly began to change once we realised the environmental concerns, as well as rising fuel prices. Alternate fuel sources started becoming more popular. While EVs are still at a fledgeling stage in India, CNG fueling has had enough time in the country to establish itself as a majorly used alternative fuel. But with sub-compact offerings in India and emission norms changing continuously, conventional fuel is no longer as harmful as it was once considered to be. Hence with this battle of affordable offerings, we address the eternal rivalry that now exists between purists and environmentalists. CNG vs petrol, Tata Tiago CNG review vs the Honda Amaze review in India.
On The Outside – Tata Tiago CNG vs Honda Amaze
The Tata Tiago received a new 2022 overall update recently. But between the petrol and CNG variants of the car, there are few to no differences, at least as far as externals go. The Tiago takes inspiration from its more premium sibling, the Altroz, and the design language is visible. An angled front grille is underlined by a chrome bar on the front end of the Tiago. The recently updated hatchback looks rather modern and sporty. With its most recent update, the Tata Tiago CNG received a new colour, as well as new features externally that weren’t seen here before. These include projector headlamps and LED Daytime Running Lamps.
The Honda Amaze is Honda’s subcompact sedan offering. Like the Tiago, the Amaze received a facelift recently as well. The boxy looking Amaze gets a fair share of chrome to give it a more premium look. The front grille has seen some changes, and fog lamp inserts get chrome bits as well. With the update, the top end Amaze also gets projector headlights with DRLs. On the rear end, the Amaze gets new LED tail lights and revised bumper details.
On the Inside – Tata Tiago i-CNG Vs Honda Amaze
The new Tata Tiago i-CNG feels more premium and sportier with a new black and beige interior. CNG specific details include a dedicated CNG button on the centre console to switch between petrol and CNG fueling. And in pure OEM fashion, the digital instrument cluster in the driver cockpit now integrates an additional CNG fuel gauge. The CNG variant also gets a fire extinguisher as standard.
The Honda Amaze interior gets a clean beige and black finish as well. New with its update though, is chrome inserts across the dashboard. Being a subcompact sedan rather than a hatchback, the space here is immense for passengers.
Storage space is also plenty in the Amaze as it gets a boot storage of 420 litres. The Tiago CNG gets no storage space at the rear, as the smaller 242 litre boot is almost completely taken up by the CNG tank.
Further differences can be seen in price. Read on for more information in this Tata Tiago iCNG review vs Honda Amaze review.
Power Train Battle – Honda Amaze vs Tata Tiago CNG
The Tata Tiago’s 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron engine puts down 86PS of power and 114Nm of peak torque. Switching to CNG brings the performance figures down to 73PS and 95Nm of peak torque for an economic drive. The dedicated CNG button makes switching to the alternate fueling system easy and user-friendly.
Performance-wise, the Honda Amaze’s 1.2-litre four cylinder takes the cake. The unit puts down 90PS pf power and 110Nm of torque, with its 1.5-litre diesel variant putting down 100PS and 200Nm of torque. Transmission options here include a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic.
The question here is of practicality however. And in that sense the Tiago iCNG does lead with a combined mileage of 27kms per litre. On the other hand, the Honda Amaze offers a mileage of 18-25kms per litre.
Money Talks – Honda Amaze vs Tata Tiago iCNG Price
The Tata Tiago iCNG gets four variants with an optional dual-tone variant for the top XZ Plus trim. Tata Tiago iCNG price starts at ₹6.12 lakhs (Ex-Showroom) for the XE variant.
The Honda Amaze gets three trims with petrol and diesel variants on offer. Honda Amaze price starts at ₹6.44 lakhs (Ex-Showroom) for the base Amaze E variant.
The Tiago and Amaze are both fairly loaded offerings. But the Amaze offers more space for passengers as well as storage, more performance and also gets alloy wheels for the top variant. The Tiago top variant gets stylised steel wheels, and also misses out on rear storage. However, it offers a lower running cost.
